About the Schuylkill Navy

The Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia was established in 1858 — making it the oldest amateur sports governing body in the United States. It began with nine founding clubs and approximately 300 members rowing on the Schuylkill River. Today, the organization has grown to 18 member clubs representing hundreds of active rowers, coaches, and community members along Boathouse Row.

For over 167 years, the Schuylkill Navy has governed rowing activity on the Schuylkill River, coordinating the river schedule, managing major regattas, and setting the safety and conduct standards that keep the river safe and accessible for everyone.
